A new exhibition of contemporary street photography is set to offer a fresh look at modern life in one of Sydney’s oldest suburbs.
Pictures by Pip Farquharson
Paddington In Pictures will launch at Paddington Library on Oxford St on June 16, featuring high-end photography from leading local photographers including Pip Farquharson, Laura Reid, Jonathan Camí, Trent van der Jagt and others.
The images of life in the picturesque inner-city suburb promise an intriguing glimpse into a neighbourhood that was established in the 1820s and has become one of Australia’s most vibrant and cherished historic areas.
Paddington In Pictures has been curated by Local Paddo editor Elizabeth Meryment, selecting from new works as well as imagery that has been previously published.
“With its terraces, alleyways, parks and cute, obscure pockets, Paddington has always been one of the coolest areas in Sydney and over the past few years it has had an exciting revival,” Meryment said. “It has so many beautiful spots that make it a such an interesting subject for photographers.
“And considering how well known the area is, it’s surprising how original these works are. Each photographer brings something new to their perspective of the area. The houses and laneways of Paddington offer so much texture and visual appeal, from the beautiful wrought iron lacework to the layering of the Paddington sandstone under feet.”
The photographs range from colourful closeups of hidden terrace doors to artistic black-and-white frames of rows of chimney tops to unexpected views of colonial and contemporary architecture and streetscapes.
The exhibition is part of a world-wide movement in appreciation of high-quality local street photography.
“Street photography has often been seen as the poor cousin to studio photography but that concept is rapidly being challenged,” Meryment said. “People want something a bit more real, a little less confected and set-up.
“Exhibitions like Women Street Photographers in New York have put real-life photography into focus and the work of our own local shooters is equal of any in the world. In fact, some of our photographers in this show also exhibit in that exhibition.”
