Hola Calita

It means ‘tiny beach’ in Spanish and with 26 seats just a pebble’s throw from the beach at North Bondi, Calita is appropriately named.

Opened last month, Calita is the third Mexican restaurant in Bondi for Liber Osorio and Pablo Galindo Vargas, the chefs behind Milpa Collective, which already runs Carbon Mexican Woodfire (on Bondi Rd) and Taqiza (Glenayr Ave).

The latest venue, positioned on Campbell Pde near Sean’s restaurant, features the food of the Baja Peninsula on Mexico’s north-west coast.

“Mexico has an incredibly rich and vibrant history and we want to respect and celebrate our home country’s flavours and food through our venues, while using the most sustainable produce to support our local community,” says chef and co-owner, Galindo Vargas. “Calita will allow us to showcase our incredible locally sourced seafood through Baja Peninsula-inspired dishes, right on the beach in Bondi.”

The short menu focuses on house-made tacos and botanas (snacks/share plates). Menu highlights include blue swimmer crab tostadas; smoked trout tacos with green mango, salsa macha, coriander and peanut salad; and a Vuelve a la Vida bloody Maria shellfish cocktail.

The cocktails list is heavy on tequila and mezcal while the wine menu is curated by respected drinks writer and co-founder of P&V Merchants, Mike Bennie.
